The global network to establish permanent primary eye-care for people worldwide

A matter of urgency: the launch of the WHO‘s SPECS2030 Initiative and the Agenda 2030
with its 17 goals of Sustainbale Development.

With effective partnerships and international networks we work for the goal that everyone in this world who needs a refractive error intervention has access to quality, affordable and people-centred refractive error services.

Amongst our partners are the government health ministries, local authorities and, international agencies, incl.: the IAPB, WHO‘s SPECS2030 Initivative, Sightsavers, Service Clubs, and local organisations (e.g. to support women‘s health), to name a few.

GoodVision collaborates with various stakeholders to create sustainable solutions that meet local needs. We work closely with local communities, NGOs, government agencies, health organisations, businesses, and other partners to design and implement solutions that are tailored to the needs of each community but can also be integrated into existing healthcare systems.

Driving Change through collaboration with officials

Vision impairment is one of the most significant health problems worldwide. Due to the large number of affected people, our work promotes system change. GoodVision embodies this by focusing on the social problem that populations can‘t reach their full potential without clear eyesight. The social and economic impact of poor eyesight affects people individually and harms national GDPs. We are happy to see that more governments are embracing the necessity to fight visual impairment systematically and seek partnering with proven concepts in the eye health sector.

Empowering Lives

Our GoodVision Glasses are designed to meet the necessary stability required in areas of low income and weak infrastructure, including the absence of eye care. Each pair of our eyeglasses is affordable, extremely du rable, and adjusted to the exact vision requirements of the wearer.

Local partnerships enable us to leverage existing resources, expertise, and infrastructure to scale our impact, providing more people in need with eye screenings, glasses, and referrals to eye clinics. This allows us to expand our reach, improving vision and enhancing quality of life for more people.

Furthermore, we create local, permanent jobs and thus contribute to the social and economic health of the community. We encourage women to join our teams and to take more senior roles – but also want to open up job opportunities to people with disabilities.

How we endorse sustainability

We aim to create a virtuous circle of education, health improvement, economic development, and environmental protection – all key elements of sustainable development.

  • Local production: Our glasses are manufactured on site in the program country, creating local jobs. Our bending machine does not require electricity and can be used anywhere.
  • Training: Locals complete rigorous training to become GVTs. They learn to perform vision screenings, to manufacture and fit glasses. This creates long-term employment opportunities with living wages and helps address the significant lack of vision care professionals.
  • Affordability: The price of eyeglasses sold in optical shops is often comparable to prices in Europe or the US, even though wages do not compare. The average person simply cannot afford those. We fill that gap.
  • Health and education: Lack of clear vision is a pathway into poverty. We are learning that impaired vision can also contribute to mental health problems. Children give up at school if seeing the blackboard is a struggle and teachers give up on them believing that they aren’t trying. When children do not thrive at school, they cannot access the professional opportunities needed to support their families.
  • Environmental friendliness: The spectacle frames are made from lightweight, flexible and durable materials that can be easily repaired and updated with new lenses as needed conserving resources.
  • Self-sustaining model: Our local organizations contribute to the operational cost by generating income through the sale of glasses.
  • Scalability: Our program is easily replicable initially designed with the capacity to expand into new regions.
  • Social inclusion: Giving people access to affordable visual aids empowers them to participate in society and contribute to the community.

We actively contribute to achieving these sustainability goals:

No Poverty

Good vision paves the way to economic and social participation and is therefore also a key prerequisite for overcoming poverty.

Zero Hunger

We see links between poor eyesight and the ability to produce and consume staple foods.

Good Health & Well-being

We are committed to providing optical care. This includes eye tests, the provision of glasses, education about eye health and referral to necessary eye operations.

Quality Education

Good eyesight is the basis for children, young people and adults learning to read, write and do arithmetic.

Gender Equality

We pay for the same function and performance regardless of gender. At the same time, it is important to open up opportunities for women in particular in their social environment.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

We also offer jobs to people who would otherwise have no chance of employment due to physical limitations, for example. Fair pay is always a matter of course for us.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

We go to the most remote and poorest regions of our programs. It is there where basic eye care is usually lacking. We aim to drive the development of infrastructure in eye health systems.

Reduced Inequalities

We mainly employ local people in our program countries and thus contribute to their social and economic participation, in particular women, so that they can lead a more self-determined life.

Responsible Consumption and Production

Our glasses are manufactured without electricity. They are extremely robust and durable. They are affordable for particularly poor people and can be easily repaired by our trained technicians.

Climate Action

We support our local organizations with a separate funding pot for active climate protection projects, which are awarded via an application process based on the respective reviewed concept.

Partnerships for the Goals

Our association works through local partner organizations in the various program countries. We cooperate with the local authorities and health institutions. We are an active member of global networks.
